US Affirms Balikatan Commitment Despite Middle East Focus

MANILA, Philippines — US 2026 Balikatan spokesperson Colonel Robert Bunn emphasized Washington's unwavering focus on its Philippine alliance and Indo-Pacific security during a press briefing, even amid Middle East deployments. ¹ ³ ⁵


Colonel Bunn noted that INDOPACOM directs US efforts toward Balikatan to address regional tensions, ensuring staff planning aligns with alliance goals. ¹ ² The exercises, starting April 20, signal dedication to humanitarian aid, security operations, and a free Indo-Pacific, unaffected by global distractions. ³ ⁵


While troop numbers hover around 17,500 from seven (7) nations including the US, Australia, and Japan, Colonel Bunn acknowledged routine "tweaks" for asset availability, standard regardless of Middle East operations. ¹ ⁴ ⁵ This reinforces interoperability and deterrence in the West Philippine Sea context. ³
