“Sa Atin ang Kanlurang Dagat”: A Young Artist’s Stand for Philippine Sovereignty

With every stroke, Angel Mae Barnillo transformed patriotism into a powerful visual statement. Her second prize-winning artwork, “SA ATIN ANG KANLURANG DAGAT: Paninindigan sa Sariling Teritoryo,” is more than a poster, it is a bold declaration of national identity, sovereignty, and unwavering resolve.

Inspired by the enduring struggle to protect the nation's maritime rights, Angel Mae's work captures the voice of every Filipino who believes that the West Philippine Sea (WPS) is an inseparable part of the country's heritage and future. Through vivid imagery and symbolism, she reminds viewers that “Hindi lamang ito simpleng guhit o disenyo; ito ay simbolo ng ating karapatan sa sarili nating karagatan.” Her artwork emphasizes that the issue extends beyond territorial boundaries, reflecting the nation's dignity, sovereignty, and the welfare of future generations.

At the heart of her message is a call for courage and vigilance. She highlights that “Ang pananahimik ay pagsuko,” underscoring the importance of standing firm amid challenges and external pressures. The poster pays tribute to Filipino fishermen who depend on these waters and serves as a reminder that every wave carries the story of the nation's past and the promise of its future.

Through her creative expression, Angel Mae urges fellow Filipinos to take pride in their heritage and defend what rightfully belongs to the nation. Her artwork echoes a resounding message, “Panahon na upang ipaglaban, ipahayag, at ipagtanggol ang ating karapatan. Ang West Philippine Sea ay atin at mananatiling atin.” In doing so, she transforms art into advocacy, an inspiring testament to the enduring Filipino spirit and commitment to defending national sovereignty.⁩
