What Is Ours Is Ours: A Powerful Artistic Stand for the West Philippine Sea

Among the many entries showcased in the poster-making contest, the artwork of Third Prize winner Ms. Noreen Grace Resuena stood out as a compelling expression of patriotism and national pride. Through her poster titled “Sa manlulupig, ’di ka pasisiil. ANG ATIN AY ATIN.” (“Never yield to oppressors. WHAT IS OURS IS OURS.”), she transformed her canvas into a powerful statement on sovereignty, unity, and the Filipino people's enduring connection to the West Philippine Sea.

Explaining the inspiration behind her work, Resuena emphasized that the West Philippine Sea is more than just a body of water. As she stated, “Hindi lang dagat ang West Philippine Sea, ito ay isang buhay na bahagi ng ating kasaysayan, kultura, at pagkatao.” For her, the sea represents a living part of the nation's history, culture, and identity, an invaluable resource that sustains communities and serves as a safeguard for the country's sovereignty.

Her artwork highlights the responsibility of every Filipino to protect and preserve this maritime domain. Resuena stressed, “Ang ating responsibilidad ay ipaglaban ito, pangalagaan, at panatilihin ang ganda nito para sa mga susunod na henerasyon.” Through vivid imagery and symbolism, she conveyed a message of stewardship, urging Filipinos to defend and conserve the nation's maritime heritage for future generations.

Central to her piece is the belief that unity remains the nation's greatest strength. She reflected, “Ang pagkakaisa ng bawat Pilipino ay susi upang mapanatili ang ating karapatan at yaman sa dagat na ito.” Her poster illustrates how collective action, shared purpose, and national solidarity are essential in safeguarding the country's rights and resources in the West Philippine Sea.

The artwork culminates in a resolute declaration of resistance and patriotism. In her own words, “Ang dating nasakop ay hindi na muling magpapasakop. Mula timog hanggang kanluran, kami ay lalaban para sa bayan!” This message captures the spirit of a nation determined to uphold its sovereignty and defend what rightfully belongs to its people.

More than a contest entry, Ms. Resuena's poster serves as a visual call to action, a reminder that the defense of the West Philippine Sea is not only a matter of territory, but also of national identity, collective responsibility, and unwavering love for country. Through her art, she gives voice to a conviction shared by many Filipinos: “Ang atin ay atin.” 🇵🇭🌊⁩
