Biodiversity of the West Philippine Sea: A Cornerstone of Philippine Natural Heritage

The West Philippine Sea (WPS) stands as one of the most ecologically significant marine regions in the world, harboring extraordinary biodiversity that sustains not only the Philippines but the broader Indo-Pacific ecosystem. As scientific research continues to illuminate the richness of these waters, it becomes increasingly clear that the Philippines bears both a profound responsibility and a legitimate stake in protecting this natural treasure.


A Marine Biodiversity Hotspot


The West Philippine Sea forms part of the Coral Triangle, widely recognized as the global center of marine biodiversity. According to the Philippine Space Agency, studies have documented that the area hosts a remarkably diverse marine ecosystem, including approximately 30% of the world's coral species. This concentration of life, spanning corals, fish, invertebrates, and marine megafauna, makes the WPS not merely a national asset but a globally irreplaceable ecological zone.


The State of the Coasts 2024 report, a collaborative effort by Philippine government agencies and academic institutions, provides comprehensive documentation of coastal and marine resources across the WPS. The report synthesizes research from institutions including the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), offering science-based assessments that inform conservation strategies.


Ongoing Research and Discovery


Philippine scientists have maintained continuous research efforts in the WPS despite challenging geopolitical circumstances. In May 2025, researchers from the UP-MSI conducted biodiversity surveys at Pag-asa Island as part of the BioConSeq-WPS program (Integrated Research for Biodiversity Conservation and Carbon Sequestration in the West Philippine Sea). The team documented invertebrate diversity, mapped reef substrates, and assessed coral and fish populations. Notably, they collected samples of Heliopora coerulea (blue coral) for population genetics studies aimed at understanding connectivity between Philippine reef systems.


These surveys revealed both resilience and vulnerability. While the middle portions of reef flats showed higher coral cover dominated by Heliopora, fore reef areas exhibited sparse coral coverage attributed to multiple stressors, elevated water temperatures, Crown-of-Thorns starfish outbreaks, typhoon damage, and destructive fishing methods. The presence of species such as giant clams (Tridacna sp.) and the highly venomous flower sea urchin (Toxopneustes pileolus) underscores the ecological complexity that Philippine researchers are working to understand and protect.


Threats to a Living Heritage


The biodiversity of the WPS faces mounting pressures. A 2023 study published in ScienceDirect highlighted critical threats including deforestation, agricultural expansion, and mining, factors that affect coastal ecosystems through sedimentation and pollution. However, the most acute threats in the WPS itself stem from unsustainable fishing practices and large-scale habitat destruction.


A 2025 policy brief from the UP-Los Baños reframes the WPS dispute as fundamentally a "socio-ecological crisis that threatens marine biodiversity and the survival of Filipino coastal communities." The analysis argues that both external maritime aggression and domestic policy gaps contribute to environmental insecurity, calling for ecosystem-based governance and multi-track diplomacy to promote sustainable peace.


The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative's documentation of extensive reef damage from dredging and landfill operations underscores the stakes. The WPS contains over 100 reef features covering approximately 37,200 km², representing about 5% of the world's reef area and 30% of the Philippines' coral reefs. Severe damage to these ecosystems diminishes not only biodiversity but also the natural coastal defenses and fisheries that millions of Filipinos depend upon.


Food Security and Livelihoods


The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has emphasized that the West Philippine Sea is "a crucial source of our food supply," making a major contribution to the national fish catch. For coastal communities from Pangasinan to Palawan, these waters provide not only sustenance but economic livelihood and cultural identity.


Declining fish catches -- driven by geopolitical tensions, rising fuel costs, and environmental stressors, have placed increasing pressure on Filipino fisherfolk. The disruption of traditional fishing grounds affects food security at both household and national scales, making the protection of WPS biodiversity inseparable from questions of human welfare and national interest.


A Philippine Responsibility


The Philippines has demonstrated sustained scientific commitment to understanding and conserving WPS biodiversity. Institutions like the UP Marine Science Institute continue to conduct field research, publish findings, and train the next generation of marine scientists. The coordination between agencies, DENR-BMB, the Philippine Air Force, the Presidential Office for Maritime Concerns, reflects a whole-of-government approach to marine stewardship.


This scientific enterprise is not merely academic. It generates the evidence base for informed policy, strengthens the Philippines' position in international forums, and affirms the nation's legitimate interest in managing resources within its exclusive economic zone. As the 2016 arbitral ruling affirmed Philippine sovereign rights over these waters, the responsibility to protect their biodiversity falls squarely on Filipino shoulders, and Philippine scientists have risen to meet it.

The West Philippine Sea represents an ecological inheritance of immense value, a living laboratory of marine biodiversity that supports millions of livelihoods and contributes to global ocean health. Philippine research institutions have documented this richness with rigor and dedication, even as external pressures threaten the very ecosystems they study. Protecting the WPS is not simply a matter of territorial assertion; it is an act of environmental stewardship that serves both national interest and the common heritage of humanity.
