The Armed Forces of the Philippines on April 9, 2026 supported the nationwide West Philippine Sea (WPS) Mural Festival through a mural painting activity held at Camp Aguinaldo High School, Quezon City. The activity was conducted on the 84th commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan, bringing together uniformed personnel, students, artists, youth groups, fisherfolks, local government units, and civilian volunteers who collaborated on mural pieces. The artworks reflected Filipino identity, coastal life, environmental stewardship, and national pride. As part of the broader festival, the initiative opened AFP spaces as platforms for creative expression and meaningful public engagement. ¹
Guided by the theme “Kulayan ang Karagatan Para sa Kalayaan” in English “Color the Ocean for Freedom,” the festival emphasized a collective commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domains for future generations while preserving cultural heritage.
The event was led by renowned muralist Amado Guerrero “AG” Saño who serve as festival director. It also featured participation from filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama and representatives from various government agencies including the Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Transportation, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, all of whom contributed to the live mural painting activities.
Prior to the event, AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. encouraged military camps nationwide to “paint the seas on their walls,” promoting artistic expressions that highlight the country’s shared heritage and its connection to the WPS. Overall, the AFP’s involvement in the mural festival reflects its broader efforts to enhance national awareness, strengthen community relationships, and cultivate a shared understanding of the WPS as a vital component of identity. ¹
For the ordinary Filipino citizen, the initiative may be viewed as a meaningful and accessible way to engage the public on issues concerning the WPS. By integrating art with national advocacy, the activity allows individuals such as the youth and local communities to better understand the significance of maritime sovereignty in a non-confrontational and culturally resonant manner. It may also foster a sense of shared responsibility and pride, as participants and observers alike are encouraged to reflect on the importance of protecting the Philippines’ natural resources and territorial integrity.
