The 1st quarter Tugon ng Masa Survey was released last May 25, 2026 that showed 76% of adult Filipinos stating they are willing to support the government in defending the country’s territory and sovereign rights including in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Meanwhile, 7% disagreed with the statement. Notably, support was highest in the National Capital Region (NCR) at 83% and Balance Luzon at 77%. The Visayas posted the lowest agreement among major areas at 68% followed by Mindanao with 75%. Relatedly, among regions, MIMAROPA registered the highest support at 93%, followed by Caraga at 91% and Western Visayas at 90%. Also, Central Visayas had the lowest agreement rate at 45%.
The WPS remained a significant national issue due to continuing territorial disputes and maritime tensions involving foreign powers, particularly China. As a result, many Filipinos recognize the importance of protecting the country’s sovereignty, marine resources, and territorial boundaries. The survey demonstrates that the majority of citizens view the defense of the WPS not only as a political concern but also a matter closely connected to national identity and pride. The findings also suggest that public awareness regarding maritime rights and international law increased in recent years. Through media coverage, government statements, and discussions on foreign policy, Filipinos have become more informed about the significance of the Philippines’ claims in the WPS, especially following the 2016 Arbitral Award.
Significantly, the survey reflects the role of public opinion in shaping government policies related to foreign affairs and national defense. When a large percentage of citizens express support for defending territorial rights, policymakers may feel greater pressure to strengthen diplomatic efforts, improve military capabilities, and build alliances with other nations. Public sentiment can therefore influence how the government approaches negotiation and security strategies concerning the WPS issue. In democratic societies such as the Philippines, citizens’ opinions are important because they help guide national priorities and influence political decision-making.
The maritime issue goes beyond territorial conflict and involves broader themes of nationalism, unity, and collective responsibility. The willingness of Filipinos to support the defense of the country demonstrates how national issues can foster solidarity among citizens despite political and social differences. It also emphasizes the importance of civic education in helping people understand the country’s rights under international law and the long-term implications of territorial disputes. Educating citizens about these matters may strengthen national consciousness and encourage active participation in discussions regarding Philippine sovereignty and security.
